Discovery Science Channel to premiere ‘Open Source Money’ documentary series on July 4

A new documentary series on the rise and evolution of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency will premiere July 4. Discovery Science Channel says the documentary, Open Source Money, is the first series to be fully financed through cryptocurrency produced with a budget over $1 million to premiere on cable broadcast television.

The limited documentary series tells the story of Dragonchain, a US-based blockchain technology company launched in 2017. Dragonchain is a blockchain platform for enterprises. It was originally developed at The Walt Disney Company in Seattle in 2014  then open-sourced in 2016. Dragonchain the company has since been spun out from Disney, and there is no relationship between the two companies today.

While telling the specifics of Dragonchain’s journey, production company Vision Tree Media says each episode will also highlight “major contributors to the cryptocurrency revolution.” Those personalities and companies include former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne and former child actor Brock Pierce, both early investors in blockchain technology; Joe Roets, the CEO co-founder of Dragonchain; YouTube cryptocurrency commentator Jason Appleton; Perianne Boring, president and founder of the Chamber of Digital Commerce; Disney; Facebook (working on its own cryptocurrency project); and more.

Open Source Money director and executive producer J.D. Seraphine says, “We believe that bringing the Open Source Money documentary series to Discovery Science Channel is significant because it’s the first crypto-funded project to launch on a worldwide cable network, and also because we’re launching with a channel dedicated to innovative breaking news in the worlds of science and technology. Discovery Science’s tech curious audience is the perfect fit for our series, and we’re looking forward to how audiences respond.”

A mobile app associated with the documentary is about to launch. Raiinmaker will reward audiences with cash to share Open Source Money with their social networks. The goal is to provide “an opportunity for exponentially faster growth in profits for networks and simultaneously increases audience loyalty,” according to a statement from the production company behind the documentary, Vision Tree Media.
